Get Thee Behind Me…..

Since March here in Guatemala, curfews periodically kept us behind closed doors, the last digit on our vehicle license determines if driving is allowed, and even your age group limits your movements. On this day neither rain nor sleet, nor snow, (nor government restrictions) could keep us from our appointed rounds. Today we walk the high street of our municipality, making purchases in small shops (bodegas) along the way. Arms loaded with vegetables and fruit, our next objective is to join the line of people, socially distanced, waiting at the bread store. As we moved in that direction, we were enveloped by a swirl of wood smoke bearing the hypnotic aroma of roasting chicken, chilies, and onion. Through gritted teeth I hoarsely uttered “Get Thee Behind Me…” and walked past without stopping. As a rule it’s best not engage a distraction. The current covid-19 situation is a distraction, you can engage it and spend all day paralyzed by worry and fear, or tell it where to go! Get the behind me….
